I know its short notice but anyone up for a road trip to VIR this Friday?

From VIR’s web site:
“Don't forget Holiday Laps to benefit the Salvation Army coming up this Friday, November 12th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with last group taking the track at 3:30.

The cost is $25 per session with each session lasting 20-25 minutes. Donations of $25 in cash, unwrapped toys or non-perishable food items will be accepted.”

The normal roll bar rule probably will not apply for this event; another Miata.net-er is trying to get confirmation. It would be very disappointing to make the drive out to VIR and find out they are enforcing the role bar rule, but if it’s confirmed we will be OK, I plan to go. The thread were I first saw it is over here http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=373428&page=9

Who’s interested?

I will be there. I encourage anyone nearby to come. It is a lot of fun AND it benefits the kids!

It would be great if we could group of those that show up with Miatas.

I won't be able to get there until around 1 pm due to work commitments.

Won't be able to make it there, but my group (Grip Syndicate) will be going to the autocross at Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg this Sunday. Anyone attending is more than welcome to meet up locally with us Sunday morning as we cruise to the track together. Makes the drive a lot shorter--especially that early in the morning. PM me for more info if you're interested!

Picked up a set of Raceland coilovers last night. For $300 shipped, I had to try them out. Still debating on wheel and tire combinations though.

Obviously I was thinking about the Nickel 6UL in 15x8.
http://949racing.com/ProductImages/6UL36N.jpg

But I was also leaning towards a set of DR20s, mainly because I can use my new tires I just put on the stock rims. With putting 1k over at least one weekend a month, I need to get better life out of the tires. I can always get the 6ULs and swap out before trips. I just can't find any good pictures of some on an NB to see how it looks.

Anyone know of another tire installer in the Norfolk area, besides Harris Tire, that does the inner weights instead of the rim of the wheel?

I have had 2 horrible experiences with Harris Tire off of Military Hwy, basically their technicians are idiots. I could remove and remount them at the hobby shop, but it's something I don't mind paying for the convenience.

They are OEM, but not the 15" flavor. Think I am going to check to see if they will fit in the oven, blast them, and powder coat them. The wife will be upset with 6 (increasing to 7 in the next 5 months) different sets of wheels fitting a 4x100 bolt pattern though!

I know where a set of these are available locally.

They are 15x7.5 et25. Typically found on a BMW E30, but should fit nicely on a Miata.

My buddy has a set with brand new (sticker) 225/45-15 Hankook RS3s. He totaled his BMW before he even got to run them. Shoot me a PM if interested and I'll give you his contact info.

I would, but I have already ordered a set of the privats. I wanted to stay with a 16" wheel, just to fill out the wheel well just a little.

I saw a set on driven for the exact brand (the konig/privat ones), just a different color/condition than I wanted. If they were a multipiece wheel I could take it apart and coat it any color I want...but I'm sure they are a one piece. So I would rather go new and take care of them from the beginning. If I change wheel size, I would need to get new tires. If I go that route right now then I would just buy the 6ULs.

On a side note, I found 60mm decals to replace the privat ones(w/mazda logo). So it might look a little better.

I spent most of my day at the Mazda dealer today.. but I feel very confident that it is going to get fixed. They found an extremely crappy wiring job that was causing my check engine light, so they fixed that. Said I had the wrong spark plugs for the car, so they replaced those and it stopped bogging.. in a straight line, but it is still bogging when you accelerate in a right turn.. (?) Strange, I know.. def. sounds like a wiring issue. They've got their best man working on it and they're hoping to get it all fixed and ready to go on Monday. I'm quite pleased with that. :D

As far as the '03, we got the same CEL code and an oil change fixed it last time.. I'm not sure what the deal is so we're going to change the oil since it's almost due anyway and hope that fixes is.. I can't remember what my husband thinks is causing it.. I don't fix the cars I just drive them

I should be out tomorrow morning with the '03. See you all then!

And yea guys.........i've yet to look under the car to see the damage done. Kinda scurred actually what my cross bars look like now.

Had a blast though and I'm lucky I found the free time to go for a drive. I rarely come across that opportunity anymore with Toys for Tots consuming my weekends.

I plan on just showing up to watch.

2nd December 2010, 13:28

I'm hopeing to make it out to pugo on sunday, i have to pin it down with the wife to make sure. as for meeting up to drive out to pungo that usually doesn't happen just because regestration and tech is early so it doesn't leave a whole lot of time before that.

you do not have to pre-reg for pungo. if there are spots available then you just pay, tech, and run. there is a spectator area and usually a food vendor on site. for the full info CLICK HERE (http://www.autocross.us/forums/index.php?showtopic=5041).

there are some picture areas close to the the autox but its whatever, where ever. i'll let you guys know soon if i get the green light.

First car off is at 10:30 but gates open at 7. If you show up early you get a chance to check out all the cars before they grid. It's supposed to be pretty cold and windy (like 46 degrees) so be sure to bring a chair and a warm blanket!!

I was thinking racing first heat meant working third but speedymatt is right, race 1st means work 2nd and have 3rd to hang out. I wouldn’t know about the 7am thing, don’t thing I’ve ever arrived before 8.

speedymatt

3rd December 2010, 15:39

yeah johnny i usually get there about then. 7am is for the setup folks and diehards, 7:45-8 is for the prepared people, and anything after 9:30 you better be really good at setting up/reading the course or your just there to fun run.

8am gives plenty of time to set the car up, register, tech, walk the course half a dozen times, rest/reflect, grid, and get to the drivers meeting.

for the spectators plan to get there about 10am or just after. you still have to sign the insurance waiver and then get to the stands before first car off at 10:30. with all that said we always run late so FCO is more like 10:45.

It was a great weekend despite the cold. Had a nice turnout at C&C considering the low temps (Miata turnout was low though). Thanks for the info on the AT fluid FastRed.

Autocross is always fun, the last event for the season at Pungo (dubbed “The Popsicle”) was a blast. The cold didn’t help the guys on R-Comps though. I’ve only had time to glace at the Pics you took weeata but I really liked the one with your car in the foreground and mine in the background; we need to find someone with a yellow NA that wants to come out and play.

I see you scored top of your class again speedymatt, Glad to hear you are thinking about Mod’ing your car into STR next year. I’m looking forward to seeing the pics you took.

OCD, thanks for helping out at the Gilligan’s island worker station. The more I think about it the more I like your Idea about coming up with a logo for our loose nit group. I would hate to see us evolve to the point where we are competing with the existing local Miata club for members; I don’t see that happening though, I think the two groups are different enough that we will not negatively impact them. People may meet us and decide they would rather join the more traditional established club than hang out with our little group, that would be cool too. I do think we should try to avoid planning anything that conflicts with the traditional clubs schedule.

OCD

6th December 2010, 11:59

I had a blast helping out, I just wish it wasn't so darn cold!

I definitely think our little group fills the gap between the established groups. I don't see it as a competing group rather a social group with a less of a structured schedule. Once I get some time I will sketch something out, might have to wait until after the 1st though.

Search for Tidewater Roadsters on Facebook. I decided to make it so you can just 'Like it', instead of only as a closed group. The closed group is still there, but we all have to be friends on facebook for that to apply. I have someone pretending to be me on facebook, so I'm now a little more reserved when it comes to friend invites.

Everyone here in the Tidewater area is invited to use it, upload pics, organize gatherings...pretty much whatever you like. For spirited driving sessions, I recommend using the group function for privacy purposes. To gain access to the group, send me an invite on FB.

Just mentioned this to the cr.net locals as a suggestion. After an xmas cruise how bought we do an evening photoshoot on the boardwalk.

A line of miatas under xmas lights with just enough light out for good outcome would make for great holiday pics. What do you think?

Is the Christmas display at the boardwalk set up this year? I’ve seen ads for the one at the botanical gardens but nothing for the boardwalk one.

I like the idea a meet under Christmas lights, especial if some people that are talented with a camera want to take pics. I’m not sure how it would work out though; I’ve driven down the boardwalk and through the botanical gardens before and the line of cars was continuous, stopping for photos wouldn’t have worked.

If you guys want to try it I will do my best to make it out.

concealer4O4

11th December 2010, 09:58

I just typed a long ass reply yesterday on my phone but it looks like it was never submitted. Here we go again........

The xmas light display on the boardwalk goes on every year. I saw them working on it last month before thanksgiving. I would offer my camera equipment, but my camera and lenses were stolen on my last vacation. As far as making pics work with moving traffic:

We could have a guy set up with his tripod on the boardwalk with his camera settings already to go. Shutter speed will definitely be slowed up for night time pictures, unless the guy is using lights also to help illuminate the car a little without so much shadow.

With that being said, the traffic is rolling SUPER slow down the boardwalk. All we would have to do is stop a few seconds for each picture. Not even long enough to let others start honking.

Xmas lights are also not usually busy during weekdays. I'll check out everything in person and drive through the lights next week. Is anyone friends with the cops in va beach?

weeata

17th December 2010, 18:15

Hey everyone.. been super busy lately. Sold my '03 so now I only have the yellow '02.. and of course it's having issues again, go figure :(

Anyway, my thought on the holiday lights situation is that it would probably be pretty impossible to do them at the boardwalk. My idea was instead to do them in Portsmouth at the Renaissance hotel parking lot, which overlooks (I believe) downtown Norfolk's lit-up skyline.. it would be wide enough to fill in the background and fit more than one or two cars at a time into the pictures? Can anyone confirm this for me, do you know if you can see the Norfolk skyline from that parking lot???

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3207/3081432918_748940623a.jpg
Here's a pic taken from a condo in Portsmouth (I think) but it gives you an idea of what the Norfolk skyline looks like from Portsmouth.

What does everyone think?

JohnnyZoomNow

17th December 2010, 19:51

I will try to make it out for the Christmas light photo shoot regardless of where we decide to have it.

The original idea of doing it at the beach boardwalk display would look great and it may not be dead yet, Blumpkins was still looking into it the last I heard. I don’t see how that is going to work though. I like the idea of doing it with the lit up Norfolk skyline as the backdrop if we find a suitable location, the Renaissance or wherever.

Hope the new issues with the ’03 are nothing major, that car looks too good not to be running right.

Not that there were not enough warnings for driving summer EHP tires in winter, but in Thursdays snow I ended up in the shoulder while making a left turn (5 MPH) comming out of gate 3 at the Joint Expeditionary Base ( Little Creek). Wasn't more than a minute and someone stopped to push me out.

Fixed almost everything, just need to get a new alignment and inspection and I can be back on the road and check out the boardwalk tomorrow. I'll go and walk around for a couple of hours so I can see how the traffic chances as the evening gets later.

I like the idea of the hotel with the norfolk skyline being in the background also. Just anything christmasy to end the year with would be nice.

Debating on grabbing the hardtop from the '92, putting it on and have it painted later.

I'm happy to have it back, but am reminded why I didn't drive it much beforehand. It's got a quirky power issue, almost a bogging when it's in boost. It spools up, then flattens out...then presses you in the seat for the last 1500 rpms. I need to do a complete tune-up since I don't think it's ever been done, but I don't think that is the problem. I have read where people disconnect the TPS sensor and it removes the problem.:dunno:

So after a little drive around town the bogging issue got worse. Now it's in complete limp mode, and won't let me go past 60 without being real gentle on the throttle. I think it's a clogged cat and maybe it fouled the o2. the only CEL is a bank 1 sensor.

Plugs solved part of my bogging issue so that might not be a bad idea... the rest was from the crank position sensor being adjusted.. I guess check plugs and if that doesn't work, let me know exactly what it's doing and at what RPM ranges and I'll spread word around to see if I can get you an answer..
The plugs needed changing, but not the issue.

The problem started when I got the car back and had a CEL light. I went to autozone to user their scanner. It came up as a bank 1 O2 sensor. I cleared the code and it started doing this. I don't know if it was just running in limp mode beforehand because I really didn't get on it until I found out what the code was. When I popped the hood to see if anything had came unplugged, I found the IAT sensor was out of the FM intake tube. Other than that, everything appears fine. I replaced that into the intake(I will be swapping it out to check it just in case).

Here's a description on the problem: During the lower rpms it behaves normally. When it gets into boost it basically feels like it wants to start pulling, but starts breaking up. It acts almost as if it's cutting spark at upper rpms, like a bad coil (going to check them and the wires tomorrow). No CELs. No other indicators.

Coil packs are notorious for going bad on the earlier cars, but not so common with the COP configuration, but you never know. Also check the cam angle sensor on the front of the valve cover. I've seen them go bad.

It sounds like you have something that is failing at higher RPM, but not failing at idle. Gotta love electrical gremlins.

Being that you have an '03 and all the parts will swap over, you should be able to figure it out pretty quick.

Hey Shawn, didn't know you were part of this forum! I'm just a newbie on here myself.. I've heard about but never seen your Miata V8 project. I didn't realize that it was Sunburst Yellow. Johnny and I were discussing finding a Sunburst Yellow NA for a photoshoot with my Yellow NB and his Yellow NC. Once it's all built and running, would you be interested in taking part in that? :)

It's been awful quite on this site and I have not seen any details on the Tidewater roadsters site.

Here's a couple of recommendations:

Pungo/Knots Island/southern Chesapeake - 2.5 hours. Depart from Va Bach municipal center

Suffolk and north east to Wakefield on the back roads and return via Hwy 460 – 4 hours. Depart from Indian river road and I 64

North Carolina down to Edenton and return via Hwy 17 – 4 hours. Depart from Va Bach municipal center

Hey guys, just trying to see if anyone knows about VIR on Friday April 1st.

They are having a charity event for Ronald Mcdonald and all his awesomeness.

From 9:00-430pm

Free Gokarting
Food tasting and tour of the grounds and tracks

the good parts:

$25 for 20 minutes of track time in your car.
$10 Arial Atom rides.. (no you dont get to drive it, but still worth a "hell yea")

Either way, I will be there with a buddy and my uncle. The ariel atom ride is almost worth it by itself to me. I understand it is a far drive for most of us, but it should be a good time.

*by the way...it does not appear on the VIR website in many places, I had a hard time finding it, but they sent me the email and it is on the "track schedule". Its real lol

JohnnyZoomNow

23rd March 2011, 11:32

$25 for 20 minutes of track time in your car.

That is enough to tempt me.

I think I should stay away from tracks until I can afford to replace the car if I ball it up. I need to install a roll bar too. On the other hand, I don’t have to push it to the edge and this is VIR, one of the nicest tracks anywhere or so I’m told.

It would mean taking a vacation day from work but, VIR….

Very tempted

This is exceptionally tempting, except for the part where my company is just moving to a new office and taking a day off on short notice would probably make my boss shoot fire...

NB-fiver

24th March 2011, 01:11

haha yes. It is very tempting.

Let me know or PM me if any body wants to meet up. I will be there and I would love to shoot you my phone number or something so that we could meet up and maybe run the track at the same time.

To my understanding by paying they will enter you into a time slot, so once you are finished with the time slot, there may be a time slot or two until you could go again, but I figure it will give you enough time to take a ride in that Atom or hit up the free karting they are offering.

Either way its cheap and the money goes to a good cost. PM me.

And yes...VIR is an exceptional track that actually was put on the top 10 tracks in the world by a few columnist for track driving. I can't wait to see what its really like. :jump:
