I am grateful to work alongside Jennifer West from our Infection Prevention department. Our collaborative efforts within a multi-disciplinary team led to a remarkable reduction of over 65% in our cardiac surgical site infections. Exciting news from the 2024 APIC Conference - our team's hard work was acknowledged with the Blue Ribbon Award for Exemplary Scientific Merit. But we are not stopping there. With a relentless focus on quality and safety, we strive for continuous improvement. Working with someone like Jen who exhibits passion and commitment allows me to be most effective. I’m proud to demonstrate how with the involvement of a Clinical Nurse Specialist, teams can achieve new and groundbreaking outcomes. The CNS approach as collaborative, systems-level thinkers enables us to envision the end result in the overlapping nurse/patient/provider context. Keep your eyes on us! Rochester Regional Health is on its way to becoming a National Model of Health and Healing. #DontTakeYourEyesOffRRH#ClinicalNurseSpecialist#InfectionPrevention#BecomingaNationalModelofHealthAndHealing#RelentlessFocusOnQualityAndSafety#UpliftOurCommunity

Passport to RGH was an amazing event that kicked off Hospital Week! The event was a great opportunity for visitors and staff to learn about the many services offered throughout the hospital. Staff members from varying departments took turns at the tables to represent their teams and share information through posters, pamphlets, handouts, and prizes. I really enjoyed getting to spend time at the cardiology table and brag on the great work our teams do. One of the highlights of the event was when staff who are currently in school for healthcare-related fields visited the cardiology table. Their excitement was palpable as they commented, “This is real? I had no idea we did that here at RGH! That’s so cool! I can’t wait to tell people!” Another highlight was when members of the cardiology teams walked by with others and stopped to say, “Look! That’s my team! This is what we do!” The pride shared by the cardiology staff and others about what RGH offers to the community was wonderful. This event was a great example of how We Serve As One at Rochester Regional Health.

The magnitude of celebrating two major events today is not lost on me & I’m feeling very grateful. This morning was the hooding ceremony for my DNP, and, as part of our nurses week celebration, this afternoon I received the 2024 Advanced Practice Nursing Excellence Award from Rochester General Hospital. Two years ago yesterday, I began working for Rochester Regional Health They saw value in me while I was completing clinical hours for my graduate program, believed in what I could bring to the organization, and offered me a position. I am so proud to be a part of their cardiology service line and proud of my work that has made a difference in the lives of our patients, nurses, and providers. I am passionate about empowering all to achieve their full potential. I am grateful to work for an organization that shares these values and prioritizes empowering their people. I am so proud to be a part of a healthcare system that actively demonstrates their commitment to becoming a national model of health and healing. I’m so honored and humbled to have received multiple nominations leading to the award I received today. Thank you to my colleagues for all of their heartwarming nominations about the importance of my work as a CNS in cardiology and thank you to Rochester Regional Health for valuing and recognizing me. #NurseEmpowerment #HealthcareExcellence #RootedInCommunity #CareAsOne#BecomingANationalModelOfHealthAndHealing

The advanced practice providers in the CTICU at Rochester General Hospital continue to excel in patient care through commitment to excellence. With a Relentless Focus on Quality & Safety to prevent CLABSIs and other CVC-related adverse events, our team remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards. Even without a CLABSI for over a year, today, we held a training course to perfect our techniques in CVC insertion, to focus on all forms of risk mitigation and safety, incorporating the latest evidence and guidelines. This initiative not only Unleashes the Power of our People at RGH but also demonstrates our Relentless Focus on Quality & Safety. Collaborating closely with David Johnson (lead APP in the CTICU), we are showcasing the power of teamwork between a Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist. This dynamic partnership serves as a model for Evolving Care Delivery and professional growth. As we extend this course to other APPs in the service line, we are committed to fostering relentless safety culture. It is a privilege to work alongside the best NPs & PAs at Rochester Regional Health embodying the vision of becoming a National Model Of Health And Healing. #BecomingANationalModelOfHealthAndHealing #ClinicalNurseSpecialist

This is incredible!!! I’m reminded again of how happy I am to have volunteered for Senator Brouk’s campaign resulting in her election. My friends in healthcare, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of donating some of your time for those who will continue to show up & make a difference for our communities!

The CNS profession is growing, program enrollment is up, but is that reflected where you work? We can’t attract and retain talent if we aren’t valuing the role. CNSs, know your own value & ask for what you’re worth (track your work to be able to show it!). Otherwise you’re contributing to holding local professional opportunities back by creating a falsely low “market value” in your area. In the end it’s our community who suffers the most by not having the CNS talent that is desperately needed in local healthcare. Because people will go work where they’re valued, where they can help patients the most, and where they can grow professionally. And equally important? Where they’ll earn an income that justifies and pays back the student loans.
